Best fun I've had with the PSP for ages February 2, 2009 C/C++ programmer (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Once I picked it up I scarcely put it down again. Very addictive. Gameplay generally very good for a hack n slash, with a reliance on (a little finger-killing but still very doable) quick time events.
Graphics - For any game - pretty competent, but for a PSP particularly well done. They've chosen colours you can actually easiy see on the screen so it's possible to play on the train.
Gameplay - it's a button-bashing adventure where you add moves and weapons with experience - If that's your thing (in my case it is) it's very well packages and delivered.
The extra add-on missions are also a bit of a giggle.
God of War? God of PSP games! March 23, 2009 G. Heywood (United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The PSP doesn't have as many games as some other consoles, but it has some fantastic ones. God of War: Chains of Olympus is no exception.
You play Kratos, and basically need to fight your way through a mythical world fighting the baddies along the way.
Firstly the graphics are superb. This is a great looking game, and certainly one of the best on the PSP. It isn't just the quality, it is the striking imagery that does it. The sound is also very good. Good use of dramatic music to really draw you in.
In terms of gameplay, I was a little surprised (I haven't played any of the other games in the franchise). You basically hack away at your enemies using a variety of gruesome moves and weapons until, with the bigger opponents, you get the opportunity to perform a "finish", which is basically where you press O, then the prompted buttons (pretty sharpish) to execute a sequence where your opponent is finished-off. This could involve tearing his/her head off, ramming your blade in the head, etc, etc. Pretty gruesome but higher entertaining (for well balanced adults!!) stuff. Imagine it is your boss and it becomes quite fun!
While it quite a linear game compared to some, there are also different puzzles to solve along the way to keep you thinking. These are a really good feature and along with the "O" prompt described above, really separate the game from a more typical hack and slash type fare.
The game itself is pretty short (probably took me 12 or 15 hours to get through but maybe because I died more than some!), but there is a reasonable amount of bonus material to work through if you are that way inclined. I am about to go through the game again on a higher skill level (I very rarely do that on games!) because although I have a bit of a backlog of games to play at the moment, this one is just so entertaining.
Overall, I think anyone over 18, who has a PSP should buy this (especially at the Platinum price).
The best action game on the PSP May 6, 2010 S. Dunn (UK) The best action game on the PSP, if not the best overall. Fantastic graphics, remains true to the GoW title and hard to put down. The story flows well and although the game is fairly short (that is from someone who is an experienced GoW player) there is a fine line between too short (I want more) and too long (I am getting bored). A must have in your PSP collection. In case you are not aware, a new PSP GoW title - Ghost of Sparta is due in late 2010.
Still the best Action Adventure title available for PSP April 4, 2010 Geo (London, England) It's a few years old now, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better game regardless of genre. Fantastic graphics amid an epic Ancient Greece atmosphere, Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the mega popular titles available for PlayStation 2 & 3.
PSP's attraction over nintendo's DS is its mature, console in your pocket mindset, and GoW:CoO executes this ideal perfectly. Simply put, if you own a PSP, and have not purchased this game yet, SHAME ON YOU!
(note: this game is not suitable for children)
Brutal, Shocking, Gorgeous December 5, 2009 Leiwa15 (Doncaster, UK) God of War (GoW) is one of those games you didn't know you needed until you'd bought it. GoW is a gloriously violent action game reminiscent of the Devil May Cry series, even down to the collectible orbs and the pink 'ghost' walls that block your passage. The lead character, Kratos, an unrelenting anti-hero, is doomed to serve the Gods until Zeus and his cronies see fit to release him from bondage, which as fans of the series will know, is not for a long time.
This is easily the best adventure game on the PSP. There are only about seven levels, ranging from the fields of Elysium to the barren Underworld, but each one is populated with hordes of monsters, all beautifully rendered. There aren't many new beasts (many come from previous installments) but if you're a newcomer to the series, you've got nothing to worry about.
GoW is much shorter than say, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, but its brevity is offset by the difficulty level. Even on normal, monsters can cause you grief, and you may find yourself replaying sections frequently. I managed to get about 4 days out of the main storyline, but there's an added God Mode (very hard difficulty) and a string of devious challenges to complete. Kratos's second costume is worth a giggle too.
The game is very cinematic - cutscenes and "ruthless kills" often require button presses to complete. These can be fun or very tedious, due to the nature of the PSP's analog stick. But the vast majority of button events can be ignored - there's more than one way to decapitate a harpy.
GoW has an 18 certificate for strong bloody violence - please heed it! The level of violence is innitially a little shocking, but the more you play, the more bloodthirsty you'll become! Highly recommended.
