5 out of 5 stars Very Unique, Very Immersive and one of the best games on PS3   March 19, 2010

Heavy Rain is one of the most unique and moving games I have played in many years. It does have a few flaws but they are very minor on the grand scheme of things. Despite the simple game play as it's essentially quick time events it is very intense for its action scenes, you can be easily drawn into the action because this game has the best animations I have ever seen in a game. All the voice actors have shared their likeness to the game and did all their characters motion capturing so it looks very fluid and dynamic and all the scenes work like a digital film, which I think is brilliant for presentation.

The controls for the characters however are awkward to use unfortunately simply moving your character can be a problem as it just feels clunky, it feels as clucky as moving your character in the game Dead Space but this is a very small issue as it can work if you are gentle with the controls it just needs a little patience. I got used to it by the end of the game and the actual actions you do in the game work very well, especially the use of the six axis controller. A lot of games just throw it in, but here it feels like it was intended to be used from the start as some quick time events almost depend on how good you are with it.

The graphics are brilliant, all the character models are superbly detailed and all the environments are rich and life like. The rain effects are also stunning and the animations are also at a very high standard especially in the quick time events and cut scenes.

The game has a very good voice acting though a few accent slips and the occasional piece of voice work didn't quite sound right but on the whole its miles better than most games voice acting and its soundtrack is also just as good. It has very dark and emotional tones that work very well for the game

I will also say that this game will not be for everyone. If you are the sort who just play FPS games and do not consider a game for its story you will not like it, but if you are open minded about games and will accept a different concept then you will like it as its very different to anything out there now.

It does have a slightly slow start but after the first half an hour or so the story really picks up and you can be drawn into it very quickly. The story for this game is dark and quite psychological. Plus there is a good twist towards the end. I did also see a lot of influence from a number of films (saw is the really obvious one) but it is a good story and it can be very moving at times, some parts were very sad and some were very exciting.

I personally ended up playing it from start to finish in one sitting which I have never done before. If however you are not sure you can always rent it as one play though is about 7 hours but there are trophies and multiple endings which give replay value.

5 out of 5 stars Original, Brutal, Essential.   May 21, 2010

In the title of my review I put the word, essential. Let me start by qualifying what I mean by that. This game will not find a place in everybody's hearts or collections; read the reviews, play the demo and speak to people who have already played it before settling on a purchase. It is a very different experience and not everyone will like it. It is essential in terms of the future of game design; this is a brave, innovative and sometimes flawed foray into an exiting new genre for games.
The subject matter is dark and unpleasant; children are being kidnapped by a serial killer only to be found dead days later on waste ground with an orchid on their chest, an origami figure in their hand and rainwater in their lungs.
You follow the story through the eyes of four people who have different motivations for finding the killer.
Ethan Marrs - A grieving father, his eldest son was killed in a car accident 2 years before and his remaining son has been taken by the killer. He has only days to solve puzzles set by the killer to save his son.
Madison Paige - A reporter who is looking for a big scoop and scoops more than she bargained for.
Scott Shelby - A retired policeman and private detective working on behalf of the victim's families.
Norman Jayden - An FBI agent trying to solve the case using state of the art technology and battling drug addiction.
Each story begins as a separate entity, but towards the end they come together in various way, some obvious some shocking.
The narrative holds up very well despite the intricacies of the plot, there are a few lapses in logic, but in general considering the depth of the story this is a remarkable achievement and very compelling. The reveal of the killer is audacious, shocking and genuinely upsetting.
When exploring the environment you have control of the character and move them by looking with the left stick and moving with R2, this is a little awkward to begin with and can lead to some occasional frustrations but for the most part works very well.
The action plays out though clever quick time events and very natural feeling button presses, you could be driving the wrong way up a freeway at one point and changing a baby's nappy the next, dodging bullets in a shootout or chasing a suspect through a supermarket. These are scripted events and you have no direct control over the course the action takes, but failure or going left instead of right or making the wrong choice can have a significant effect on the story and the fate of your character.
The character animations beggar belief, with facial animation that allow the digital characters to show subtle emotion, and motion captured movement that gives them real individuality. This allows you to engage with them on a level never seen in games before. The voice acting of the major characters is exceptional and the majority of the supporting cast are equally strong, once again giving a depth and realism to the gameplay rarely experienced before.
There is a part in the game where Ethan has to kill a man to get information on his son, when it came to it I could not pull the trigger because I could not bring myself to turn him into a killer. As a result I went into the final part of the game with a vital clue missing, but a clear conscience. This is Heavy Rain's strength; it makes you consider the choices you make, not just on a practical level, but on an emotional one too. At one point I failed to rescue a character, and has to restart the scene and play again to make sure I was successful, not because I would make the game more difficult without them, but because I didn't want them to die.
The world you occupy is dark, grey, very realistic and, other than the first 20 mins of the game, raining. That is not to say it is dull, quite the opposite, the detail is incredible, the lighting subtle and evocative and full of grit and feeling; drink it in when you can as you rarely visit the same location twice.
There are parts of the game that move at a glacial pace and others, like the beautifully choreographed fight scenes, that will have your pulse pounding. And others, particularly the trails Ethan has to endure in the attempt to save his son, that will have you squirming in your seat.
There are certain parts of Heavy Rain that if you mess up the button sequences your character can die. This is not game over, you will continue the story arcs of the remaining characters, but the ending and the experience will be significantly different.
This is where Heavy Rain stands out. Speak to people what have played it and they will all have had a different experience, there are multiple endings from uplifting to downright depressing and each player's journey to the ending will play out very differently due to their successes, failures and most importantly choices during the game. It demands multiple play troughs' and the game actively encourages you to do this by allowing you to play though scenes with a choice to save or not; so you can go back though a scene before you finished the game without effecting you current save. You will be compelled to play again simply because you want to see all the different things the characters you have journeyed with experience.
A warning - in my view this game should have been rated 18. Not because of the violence, swearing, partial nudity or the slightly embarrassing sex scene; these this are generally done in service of the narrative and are not excessive or gratuitous; but because the game makes you experience these things on a quite personal level, it could be disturbing for younger people. I am 38 and felt quite wrung out after a couple of the sessions of play.
I hope this gave you an insight into my experience, as you can probably guess I loved this game and can't wait to see what Quantic Dream do next. Some DLC is on the way, the first episode is already on PSN.
If you are looking for an adult, character driven, emotionally engaging, innovative and original experience as a tonic to the raft of generic playing experiences out there, pick up a copy of Heavy Rain and immerse yourself in a totally different entertainment experience.

5 out of 5 stars Deep,Intelligent And Completely Brilliant !   April 15, 2010

This game is like nothing else before. In fact it is more than a game, it is an experiance. After completing Heavy Rain i took a big sigh of relief, not because i was glad it was over, but because you became so immersed and involved in the game that you almost become a part of it, a part of it's world. This game is no idiotic everyday action game, this is not something you simply pick up and play for five minutes or so, and neither is it a game to relax to. I spent most of the game at the edge of my seat with sweaty palms shouting at the tv with suspense. The game is a cocktail of button sequences,clue-solving,investigative work and of course decision making. Which is where the genius of the game is. Every choice you make, every action you take has a consequence. And that consequence changes the game's story or character involvement. The storyline is chilling, gritty and smart. It keeps you guessing right until the end, but of course how will it end ? That is up to you. The ending is one of the game's highlights, because there are so many.It all depends on how you've played the game. I got one ending, and my friend got a completely differant ending, as did his friend ! It's completely brilliant ! This game is amazing. From the storyline, to the player involvement, to the tense action scenes, to the charaters, to the cinematics, everything about this game is truly stunning. I recommend this game if you are looking for something fresh, exciting and completely mind-blowing.

5 out of 5 stars Gaming masterpiece!   April 4, 2010

If there ever was one reason to buy a PlayStation 3, Heavy Rain is that reason. I myself didn't have a PS3 until very recently as I knew this game was on the horizon, the same incredible talent that brought us the amazing, yet unfortunately flawed, Fahrenheit from the last generation.

Heavy Rain builds on this with incredible strength, but branches to give it the might of being an incredible experience throughout, without the plot crazies that appeared in their former title. It's an action-adventure at heart and manages to truly grip you like no other game. Gone are the days of not caring about the characters in the game, in Heavy Rain you genuinely feel for each character and you're on the edge of your seat in every action scene as you know the possibility that your character can die and the game will continue is always a chance.

The game is actually not really a game, rather a true piece of story-driven interactive entertainment. It's a movie that you can interact with, and for the most part this is perfect. The game does suffer from minor camera problems when you're walking due to the third-person camera perspective view, but this certainly doesn't detract you from the content within. I will not waste your time informing you of who you play or the story as there really is not much point, but just know that this is an essential title for any serious gamer and I could not stress enough how much I recommend it.
